Bristnall residents are set to lose the much-loved Londonderry Playing Fields if Sandwell Council’s plan to build a new swimming centre on the site goes ahead.

Local people are angry at the prospect of losing the playing fields on Londonderry Lane, which is a popular place for walking and ball games.

Sandwell Green Party opposes the plan, which will cause widespread disruption to people and traffic as it is built. If planning permission is granted, work will start next year on the £60m project. Popular local swimming centres, Langley and Smethwick, will close when the centre opens for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

John Macefield, Green Party Candidate for Bristnall, says: ‘The loss of these playing fields would be a huge blow to Bristnall residents, who use the fields to walk, play games, and relax. Sandwell Council wants to take it away from them for a project that’s neither wanted nor needed.
